Monika Mysiak
W 2012 roku ukończyła z wyróżnieniem malarstwo na katowickiej Akademii Sztuk Pięknych. Dyplom zrealizowała w pracowni malarstwa pod kierunkiem prof.J.Rykały oraz dyplom dodatkowy w pracowni rysunku pod kierunkiem prof.A.Kowalskiego. Dwa lata wcześniej, w 2010 ukończyła Informatykę i Ekonometrię na Uniwersytecie Ekonomicznym w Katowicach.
Aktualnie doktorantka na ASP w Katowicach.
Mieszka i tworzy w Chorzowie.


Born in 1986 in Sosnowiec. In 2012 graduated (with honours) in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, diploma in Prof. Jacek Rykała’s studio, annexe in Prof. A. Kowalski’s drawing studio. Two years earlier, in 2010, she graduated in Computer Science and Econometrics from Katowice’s University of Economics. She currently lives and works in Chorzów.

"Monika Mysiak od dwóch lat realizuje cykl obrazów zainspirowanych zwyczajem „wyprawy” jaką otrzymywała dziewczyna wychodząc za mąż. „Bohaterką” cyklu Moniki Mysiak, który artystka realizuje od dwóch lat, jest bielizna odnaleziona przez nią na dnie szafy swojej mamy podczas wyprowadzki z rodzinnego domu: stare halki, chusteczki, serwetki. „Białe i wyszyte bogatymi haftami leżały zapomniane, ale starannie złożone w kostkę, a wyjmowane były tylko czasami, ostrożnie niczym relikwiarze, po to, aby je poczuć, powąchać i powspominać.” – pisze Monika Mysiak.
Taka „wyprawa” była częścią posagu panny, który swoim córkom szykowały zapobiegliwe mamy, często przekazując nieużywane elementy bieliźnianej odzieży z pokolenia na pokolenie. Zwyczaj ten zapisał się szczególnie na Śląsku, skąd pochodzi artystka. Oswajanie młodej dziewczyny z jej przyszłą rolą było także wyznaczaniem ram dla jej seksualności, która musiała być podporządkowana pożądanym cechom wiernej żony i cierpliwej matki.
Monika Mysiak układa te autentyczne tkaniny w zwoje i kształty w subtelny sposób odnoszące się do kształtów kobiecego ciała. Kompozycje realizuje olejem na płótnie, rysunkiem na papierze lub w formie grafiki, we wszystkich tych technikach uzyskując mistrzowską perfekcję. W jej monochromatycznych obrazach jest spora dawka erotyzmu, przefiltrowanego przez temperament  autorki. "

The main “character” in Monika Mysiak’s cycle she has been working on for the last two years is her mother’s lingerie and linen found on the bottom shelf of a wardrobe while moving house: old petticoats, handkerchiefs, napkins. “White and richly embroidered, they were lying there, forgotten but neatly folded, taken out rarely and carefully like reliquaries, just to be touched, smelled and remembered”, writes Monika Mysiak.
Such a set was traditionally part of a bride’s dowry prepared for their daughters by thrifty mothers, often handing over elements of unused linen from generation to generation. This custom was especially popular in Silesia, where the artist comes from. Preparing a young woman for her future role was also connected with delineating her sexuality, which had to fit a set of desired characteristics of a faithful wife and patient mother.
Monika Mysiak arranges the authentic fabrics in rolls and shapes referring in a subtle way to the feminine body. She creates the compositions by means of oil on canvas, drawing on paper or in graphic form, achieving mastery and perfection in all these techniques. Her monochromatic pictures are charged with eroticism filtered through the author’s temperament.

Regarding the art of Monika Mysiak

With their obvious hints of intimate female form, some would quickly call this art erotic. Of course it is a fine coarse label to place on this, but it completely lacks the level of subtlety the artist has applied. Certainly, if you let it hang out too much with the genre termed eroticism, it would be an insult.

For all their poetic delicacy and sophistication, it is perhaps more apt to say that the works suggest feminine sexuality in a respectful and reassuringly confident way. Just as importantly, it is one of those rare female expressions of it rather than the somewhat overexposed male manifestations that we are all too familiar with.

It sounds a tad serious until you are being introduced to a sparkle of Monikaesce humour:

It’s about women’s lives, about happiness, sadness, ecstasies and all intimate moments of their lives written on used underwear. Each painting can be a different story written in “underwear language”.

The series of work shares a beautiful background story that transcends generations of women. It does so by weaving into the very fabric of the works a tradition popular in Poland, where the artist comes from.

However the chosen direction for this series was a little like a chance happening — unless you are one of those who insist such phenomena do not exist. Simply, whilst moving to another house, Mysiak found a nearly forgotten bottom shelf storing embroidered linen, petticoats, handkerchiefs and lingerie handed down to her from her own mother.

Such a set is part of a bride’s dowry prepared for their daughters by resourceful mothers, often handing over elements of unused linen from one generation to the next. As you could expect, the significance of this is not just a helping hand. No according to the artist it is:

preparing a young woman for her future role delineating her sexuality, which had to fit a set of desired characteristics of a faithful wife and patient mother.

In that sense it is a rite and a beautiful one at that. But the senses also come into play by almost replaying recorded messages from the past, as the artist says about the objects: “they were lying there, forgotten but neatly folded, taken out rarely and carefully like reliquaries, just to be touched, smelled and remembered”.

It is clearly a story that had to be told, and told well by someone. In that sense we would go as far as calling this series of work an important contribution to art.

The canvases and drawings are almost monochromatic pictures, and with their soft tonality, they actually emphasise the few hues making them all the more vibrant.

Anyone who has tried their hands on representing drapery convincingly knows how difficult it is to do technically. However, technique is not enough on its own. The attempts will collapse and die as art if you paint them exactly as observed. You have to have an affinity with fabric itself and feel it somehow. You also need to bend a few rules to make it potent enough without it losing its believability. In that context, Mysiak masters everything the neo-classical Ingres understood about drapery, though with more of the expressive touch of Lucian Freud somewhat better suited to our age.
